Our concert was featured in a story for The Fiji Times on 15 December 2014
If you’re looking for a family funfilled event on Saturday night, the VOU Dance Fiji School Concert is for you, says school director Sachiko Soro.
The concert, the second one for the year, will showcase the talents of 100 students between the ages of three years and 65 years.
Mrs Soro knows the concert coincides with the Island Vibes concert but says they are targeting families who love the art of dance and choreography.
“We booked our venue months before the other concert was confirmed. We are still confident that we will get the numbers — our concert is more family oriented and one which the whole family can enjoy together,” Mrs Soro said.
She said the concert fulfils the purpose of the school in developing analytical minds for children engaged in art programs during their formative years.
“I just really think it’s important to get your kid into some form of art — any form of art actually, gives children an opportunity to develop a questioning mind — to learn how to problem solve,” Mrs Soro said.
“If they’re going to create a dance, they have to think about which way they are going to turn, what they’re going to wear, what music they’re going to use, what they’re going to dance about and all these series of questions is so important towards developing the way we think.”
She confirmed the concert would also feature two international choreographers — Kevin Yee Chan from the US and Simone Wierod from Denmark, who had been a part of VOU’s teaching staff member for the current term.
The concert will be held at 7pm at the Suva Civic Centre.
